Chief Financial Officer

Summary:

The Chief Financial Officer ensures that NHPR is financially strong, efficient, cost-effective, and smooth running, so the organization can fulfill its vision of using trustworthy journalism to enrich people’s lives and build stronger communities.  As a key member of the executive team, the Chief Financial Officer will serve as a strategic business partner to the CEO and Board of Trustees. The Chief Financial Officer will provide useful financial insights to aid decision making and strategic oversight of major initiatives with financial implications, such as the opening of new lines of business, shared service agreements, or mergers and acquisitions.

The CFO reports to the President/CEO. This is a hybrid-eligible role based in Concord, NH.

 

Essential Functions:

Strategic

• Lead the stewardship of NHPR’s financial health and operational effectiveness in support of its mission of public service journalism and community empowerment.
• Serve as the principal financial and strategic business partner to NHPR’s CEO, Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, and senior leaders.

• Serve as a liaison to the Finance Committee and Investment Sub-Committee; support these committees through communications, research, and follow-up. Attend Board and committee meetings as required; 
• Build the organization’s financial acumen and a culture of financial stewardship, transparency, financial literacy, and accountability; 
• Assist the CEO and other senior leaders in analyzing new opportunities, drafting prospective programmatic budgets, and determining the cost effectiveness of initiatives; 
• Contribute to the development, delivery and overall management of strategic and operating goals for the organization; and 

• Lead the financial evaluation and execution of potential mergers, acquisitions, affiliations, and other growth partnerships in public media, including business-case development, financial and operational due diligence, risk assessment, transaction planning and post-transaction integration, to ensure mission alignment and long-term sustainability; 

 

Additional Responsibilities:

• As a member of NHPR’s senior team, embody and model the organization’s values and work collaboratively to advance the organization’s mission, vision and strategy.  

Financial

• Ensure that appropriate systems are in place to maintain and continually strengthen internal accounting controls;
• Lead the development of the annual organizational budget and other short and long-term financial planning efforts; 

• Oversee grant accounting, donor restrictions, funder reporting and the appropriate use of restricted and unrestricted funds, partnering with Development and program leaders to ensure compliance and align resources with organizational priorities;

• Produce monthly financial and operational analysis reports; 
• Direct accounting operations;    

• Oversee operations and relationships with banks, investment advisors, auditors and other financial partners, including banking services, financing arrangements, and investment-policy implementation;
• Oversee comprehensive cash-flow management, liquidity forecasting, and reserve strategies to ensure long-term stability and resilience against operational fluctuations.
• Lead robust financial modeling and multi-scenario planning to guide executive leadership and the Board through growth opportunities, economic shifts, and potential operational risks.

Contracts, Compliance, and Governance

• Act as compliance officer: Track compliance requirements and ensure that NHPR stays in compliance with all applicable regulations, e.g., FCC, states and municipalities;

• Develop and lead a unified Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework that synthesizes regulatory compliance, insurance strategy, debt management, and internal controls into a cohesive risk-mitigation strategy for the organization.
• Oversee completion of the annual audit and filing of Form 990, ensuring the timely and accurate compilation of required documents, reports, and reconciliations from all departments.

• Oversee the language, annual updates, contract processes, organizational management, and compliance of all vendor/partner contracts/agreements.
• Manage insurance for the organization, including risk management and compliance.

• Effectively manage the Finance staff and consultants, inspiring exceptional performance and high standard of ethics.

Preferred Experience: 

We’re looking for someone with these skills, qualities, and credentials…

• Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or MPA preferred.
• At least 7 years of progressively increasing financial management and operational experience, with preference for leadership experience in a non-profit.
• Deep financial management and/or accounting background (at $5M+ organizations preferred), including financial modeling.
• Experience managing staff and budgets, project planning and execution, and working with boards.
• Respect for the values of mission-oriented, public service journalism.
• A commitment to the cultural principles and practices of inclusion and belonging. 
• Highly organized, resourceful, accountable, and detail oriented.
• Unquestioned ethics.
• Excellent management, communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills. The ability to exercise excellent judgment in decision-making and demonstrate trustworthiness in dealing with confidential matters.

 

Compensation & Benefits:

This is a full-time, exempt position; hybrid eligible position. The salary range is $139,000 to $160,000 annually. 

NHPR offers a generous benefits package that includes health, dental and vision insurance; company-paid short- and long-term disability; flexible spending accounts; a 403(b)-retirement savings plan with a company match, and a free on-site fitness center. Full-time employees are entitled to a minimum of three weeks of vacation time and 12 paid holidays, as well as paid sick and parental leave.
